Conference week has finally arrived! The committee and volunteers are busy with final preparations at the Henry B. Gonzalez Convention Center as attendees are arriving at one of the most anticipated genealogical events of the year.

Today, ProQuest sponsors Librarians’ Day, a pre-conference event, that includes sessions on Preserve the Pensions, Building a Core Genealogical Collection for Your Library, San Antonio Public LIbrary Texana and Genealogy Collection, and Genealogy Research Sources Available at the Texas General Land Office.

Wednesday is Focus on Societies day. A half-day workshop with David Rencher and Ed Donakey will show societies how to develop a plan for managing and building their organization. In the afternoon, society members and leaders can select from a range of topics on strategic planning, society technology, outreach, education and more.

Thursday morning, the conference kicks off with keynote address, Orphan Trains to Texas, followed by the opening of the Exhibit Hall and more than 130 sessions and workshops for genealogists.

It’s not too late to join in. Onsite registration begins Tuesday afternoon at the Henry B. Gonzalez Convention Center and continues each day. There is a special day-rate for Saturday of $49. The exhibit hall is open Thurday through Saturday and offers free admittance to the public.

On Stage in the Exhibit Hall

Just a few more days until FGS 2014 begins! You’re registered and signed up for workshops and special events. Now you’re finalizing your session schedule and looking at the exhibitor directory to see who will be there. The Exhibit Hall opens on Thursday with exhibitors and organizations ready to share their solutions to help you research your ancestors, tell your family story and more. Some of these vendors and other presenters will take the stage in the Exhibit Hall for a series of thirty-minute presentations each day during exhibit hall hours. There are two stages in the back of the Exhibit Hall near the Food Court.

Hosted by the Texas State Genealogical Society, an FGS 2014 co-host society, one of these stages features short presentations that cover a range of topics: using Mocavo, Evernote, findmypast, PERSI; organizing your research and breaking down brick walls; photography during the Civil War and so much more.

Speakers include Maureen Taylor, Craig Scott, Jen Baldwin, Michael J. Leclerk, Thomas MacEntee, and Lisa Louise Cooke just to name a few.

FGS 2014 Conference Syllabus Available Online

How can it be well into August already? We are now just days away from the 2014 Federation of Genealogical Societies conference in San Antonio. Conference committee members from across the U.S. and representatives from the Texas State Genealogical Society and San Antonio Genealogical and Historical Society are working to make sure this year’s conference meets every expectation.

The syllabus is online

The syllabus is now online and available for downloading. Of course, if you’ve been following the FGS 2014 Conference blog, you already know that! Visit https://www.fgsconference.org/account/login/ and sign in with your Username and Password. Click on “Download your syllabus” in the rectangle at the top of the screen.

What are the benefits of an online syllabus?

  • You can look at it before coming to the conference and use it to help you choose which sessions to attend. Viewing the syllabus materials beforehand can help you decide if a session is just what you need.
  • Use it to help you decide between classes when you are having trouble making a choice.
  • Save the syllabus to your laptop, smartphone, or tablet and take the digital copy with you to your conference sessions.
  • Or print the syllabus pages for sessions you plan to attend. You can take notes right on these pages. If you like having the syllabus with you, this will make for a much lighter load than carrying the whole printed syllabus around the convention center.
  • If you need to print syllabus pages while you’re at the conference, be sure to visit the Cyber Café in the Exhibit Hall, sponsored by Findmypast, Dell, and Lexmark, on Thursday, Friday, and Saturday. Dell and Lexmark have generously provided computers and printers for your convenience.

Last call to add to your registration

While you are logged into your account, check to be sure that you have registered for any luncheons, workshops, or special events that you want to attend. If you need help logging into your account, visit our Registration FAQs page. The last day to add luncheons and special events to your registration online is Tuesday, August 19. There might be a few tickets left for these events when you arrive at Registration, but this is not guaranteed!

Onsite registration

Every registrant needs to stop at the Registration area in the Henry B. Gonzales Convention Center to pick up his or her Conference tote bag, filled with all of the materials and information needed for the week: Onsite Conference Guide, name badge, special offers, event tickets and wristbands, syllabus on CD, and other items. If you ordered a printed syllabus, this is where you pick it up. FGS welcomes onsite conference registrations for those unable to plan ahead.

Thursday: 7 am-2 pm

Conference Onsite Guide

Each registrant receives this handy guide that will answer just about every question you might have about the conference and related events. It includes important FGS conferences policies, as well as general information. A program grid tells in what room each lecture, workshop, or luncheon will be held plus a description of each session to help you decide what to attend. Also included are layout maps of the convention center and exhibit hall to help orient you to the conference space; maps showing convenient parking; and maps for those walking to the evening events.

The large Exhibit Hall is open to both registrants and non-registrants.

Thursday: 9:30 am-5:30 pm
Friday: 9 am-5 pm
Saturday: 9 am-3:00 pm

Henry B. Gonzales Convention Center Parking

A city parking garage is located next to the Marriott Riverwalk hotel and across Market Street from the Convention Center. There is also a lot between the Convention Center and the Institute for Texan Cultures. Several surface parking lots are within two blocks of the convention center.

Name Badges

Please wear your conference name badge for entry into session rooms and for admittance to the Exhibit Hall. If you are registered for a specific day, you may only attend sessions on that day.

Special Events

The evening events – the Institute of Texan Cultures and A Night in Old San Antonio – both require pre-registration. A wristband is required for admittance to each event and will be in your registration packet. The tour to Panna Maria also requires pre-registration. A wristband is required to board the bus.

What to wear?

This is Texas in the summertime, so wear what makes you the most comfortable. But, Texans know how to do air conditioning, so be prepared for cooler temperatures in the session rooms. The evening events are casual. In particular, since A Night in Old San Antonio on Friday is outdoors, wear something cool. Everything is close, but still don’t forget to pack comfortable shoes.

Judy G. Russell is a lecturer, educator, and writer who enjoys helping others understand a wide variety of genealogical issues, including the interplay between genealogy and the law. Her blog, The Legal Genealogist, is an excellent source to find answers to the questions we have about many of the legal situations genealogists encounter.

Judy has a varied background with a bachelor’s degree in journalism from George Washington University in Washington, D.C. and a law degree from Rutgers School of Law-Newark. She holds Certified GenealogistSM and Certified Genealogical LecturerSM credentialsfrom the Board for Certification of Genealogists® where she currently serves as a member of the Board of Trustees. She is member of the National Genealogical Society, the Association of Professional Genealogists, and, among others, the state genealogical societies of New JerseyNorth Carolina, VirginiaTexas and Illinois

She has worked as a newspaper reporter, trade association writer, legal investigator, defense attorney, federal prosecutor, law editor and, for more than 20 years, she has been an adjunct member of the faculty at Rutgers Law School. She is on faculty of the Institute of Genealogy & Historical Research (IGHR) at Samford University, the Salt Lake Institute of Genealogy (SLIG), the Genealogical Research Institute of Pittsburgh (GRIP), and Boston University’s Center for Professional Education. Judy has written several articles for both the National Genealogical Society Quarterly  and the National Genealogical Society Magazine.

Kris Rzepczynski is a Senior Archivist at the Archives of Michigan, an FGS board member and past-president of Mid-Michigan Genealogical Society.  He holds a Masters in Library and Information Science from Wayne State University, a Master of Arts in History from Western Michigan University, and a Bachelor of Arts in History from the University of Michigan.

Kris has presented at national, state, and local conferences, including the National Genealogical Society, Federation of Genealogical Societies, Ohio Genealogical Society, Public Library Association, Historical Society of Michigan, Michigan Library Association, and for dozens of local genealogical societies.  His memberships include the Association of Professional Genealogists, Polish Genealogical Society of Michigan, Historical Society of Michigan, Historical Society of Greater Lansing, and Michigan Library Association.

Q&A Panel and One-on-One Consultations

After reading your registration confirmation, you may have been delighted to know that on Tuesday afternoon there would be a panel of expert genealogists to help break those brick walls. Sadly, this is not the case. The FGS Conference Committee is very sorry for not being able to offer this session and apologizes for any disappointment this may cause.

If you are planning to arrive on Tuesday, take some time to mingle with other genealogists and discuss your research.  Sharing your brick wall questions often allows you to look at them with fresh eyes or gain a new perspective from another genealogist. The expert is the one who has broken through a brick wall!

Gone to Texas, August 27-30, 2014

In just a few weeks, the nation’s genealogists will gather in San Antonio for the FGS 2014 Conference – “Gone to Texas.”  Here are some of the frequently asked questions we’ve received. If you have a question not covered here, don’t hesitate to ask it! If one person has a question, it’s likely someone else has the same or similar question.

May I still register for the Conference?
Yes, you may. Visit the Conference website at www.fgsconference.org to register via the easy online form. Watch the conference blog at www.fgsconference.org/blog for last minute information on transportation, events, speakers, workshops, and things to do in San Antonio. You may also register at the door.

Do I have to be a member of FGS to register for this conference?
No. In fact, FGS does not have individual memberships. FGS members are genealogical societies. That results in representation of thousands of members of those societies. You also do not need to be a member of one of these societies to register for the FGS conference. If you are interested in genealogical research, you are invited to join in on the conference education and fun. Anyone can register for the FGS 2014 Conference at www.fgsconference.org/registration.

I have already registered for the conference but now I want to add a luncheon or an evening event; can I do that?
Yes, it’s very easy. Revisit the FGS Conference website and login using the PIN number you received after you registered. Follow the steps on the screen and add the meals or events to your existing registration.

I am not sure which lectures I will be attending. Do I have to select them now?
The primary reason we ask you to select the sessions you will attend is to help the individuals doing the space planning. Knowing how many people to expect for an individual lectures helps insure that the room is the right size.

What do I do when I arrive at the convention center?
Be sure to stop by registration when you arrive during posted hours. Here you will pick up your tote bag, name tag, meal and special event tickets, onsite guide with exhibit hall information and maps and other goodies. Registration is open on Tuesday from 3:00-7:00 p.m. and it opens on Wednesday morning at 7:00 a.m. For the complete registration schedule, visit: www.fgsconference.org/registration 

How do I locate where a lecture, workshop or luncheon is being held after I arrive at the conference?
When you pick up your registration materials, a Conference Guide will be included that lists the rooms each specific lecture is in along with a layout map. Another part of the booklet links vendors to their booth numbers and gives a layout map of the Exhibit Hall. Much of this information will be available on the conference website as well and accessible via the FGS mobile app. Details will be posted on the conference blog at www.fgsconference.org/blog just before the conference begins.

The General Land Office was established by the 1836 Constitution for the Republic of Texas. It housed its first land records in Houston, but moved the archives to Austin in 1839. Austin residents, armed with cannon, kept the Texas Rangers from moving the records back to Houston in 1843, during what came to be known as the Archives War.

Today, the main functions of the General Land Office are earning money for the state’s Permanent School Fund, overseeing state veterans benefits, maintaining historic land records and maps and acting as steward of the state’s coast.

The General Land Office conserves and protects more than 35 million historic land documents, maps and notes that are open to the public for research. Many of these records date back to 1720 and include maps, sketches and plat maps. Forming the foundation of all private land ownership in Texas, the maps and documents of the Archives are still used today by researchers, surveyors, genealogists and students of Texas history.
